The Greater Seattle General Defense Committee stands with Solidarity Cville and we support their call to action to oppose August 12th’s Unite the Right event. We ask that you stand with them too.
Fascism should never have a platform and must be opposed.
On May 13th, notorious White Nationalist Richard Spencer brought dozens of “alt-right” and neo-nazi agitators to this largely liberal city. During the day, they marched and had a photo-op rally at the Jackson statue. You probably already heard about their torch-lit rally in a park that night that was eerily evocative of a KKK rally. On July 8th, the Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan held a rally in Charlottesville, the first of its kind to happen there in decades.
Now, local Charlottesville agitator Jason Kessler, who had a hand in all these aforementioned gatherings of hate-groups is planning to host a “Unite the Right” event in Charlottesville on August 12th.
Allowing fascists to gather and have a platform puts anyone in their vicinity in danger. We are especially aware of this fact after one of our members was shot and nearly killed at a similar event in January here in Seattle. When you take into consideration the fact that the event our member was shot at was a Milo Yiannopoulos speaking event while this one is indisputably a white nationalist event, the likelihood of violence is that much higher.
Under the guise of free speech, they bring violence. For weeks in advance the organizers of these events will drone on and on to the media their desire for peaceful protest, with the adage that they will defend free speech. We implore those with power to make the right decisions to keep the people safe.
You have the power to take a stand against fascism!
The rise of white nationalism has been well documented. We must not let these groups use Charlottesville as their symbolic home. They will stop at nothing to spread their hateful message and incite violence.
Let’s not let that happen.
